Epsom Racecourse

The Brief:

RaceTech was responsible for a complete turn key solution at the new multimillion pound Duchess Stand at Epsom Racecourse, home to the world famous Derby. Services to Jockey Club Racecourses, which owns 14 racecourses including Epsom in the UK, included the design, supply and support of all audio visual equipment for the new stand, incorporating digital content, signage and IP TV with balanced audio, remote support and control systems.

The Project:

Created for both raceday and non-racing events, the £400,000 audio visual installation features a host of innovations including a giant projector located in the main betting hall, believed to be the largest on any UK racecourse, complementing more than 100 high quality commercial Phillips display screens throughout the facility.
Technically, the system is based around four complete 19” racks of equipment in the main control centre on the ground floor of the main stand. The 44U full height racks feature full climate control and are backed up by an auto sensing uninterrupted power supply, to ensure that the emergency systems continue to work in the event of a power failure. The system was tested in real time with each device turned on simultaneously, simulating a power cut out, to prove that there is no compromise to the essential sound or control systems.

Technical highlights

• Giant projector boasting 15,000 ANSI Lumen output for optimal viewing
• More than 100 high quality display screens delivering zoned multi floor, multi- room TV, signage, camera & information displays
• 300 loudspeakers
• Total amplifier power of 11,400 watts of balanced audio
• 36 inputs routable to 44 outputs in a large digital audio matrix
• PA and sound reinforcement systems, as well as the multi channel TV distribution system are all controlled by password protected touch screens

• Cat5 cabling
• Remote diagnostics via online management allowing real time monitoring and corrective maintenance
• UPS, racking, cooling, and electrical distribution systems
• Full AMX touch screen control – allowing user controlled content routing
• Large format stage projection & camera system
• Door entry and control system
• Liaison with main M&E contractor, architects & client
• Remote support and control capability.
• Racked DSP provided resilience, power smoothing and environmental control

Due to an on-site incident experienced by the client after the initial project handover, RaceTech AV has subsequently refurbished the entire AV build across all floors within the building to bring the installation back to the originally installed standard and to include multi location and multi building digital signage capability.

RaceTech AV also provided disaster recovery, key event hire and operator services during this time to ensure the client could remain operational and deliver against previously committed bookings.

Conclusion:

RaceTech CEO Brad Higgins said, “The system was designed in close consultation with the management team at Epsom Downs who need to be able to satisfy the requirements of very diverse customer groups, from racegoers to conference and exhibition organisers operating in all kinds of environments. We are confident that the new facility at Epsom has audio visual capabilities that will exceed the expectations of existing and potential clients for a long time to come.”
